Commercial Auto Coverages Explained
A commercial auto policy is built from separate coverages. Some are required by law or by your contracts, and others are optional protection for your vehicles and your business. Here is what each one does, in plain English.
Liability: Protection When You Cause an Accident
Bodily Injury Liability
Pays for injuries to other people when you or your driver is at fault, including medical bills, lost wages and legal defense if you are sued.
Property Damage Liability
Pays for damage your vehicle causes to someone else's property, such as another car, a building, a fence or a gate on a job site.
Combined Single Limit (CSL)
Many business policies use one limit, such as $1,000,000, that covers bodily injury and property damage together per accident. Many general contractors, property managers and customers require a $1 million limit before you can work for them.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist
Protects you and your drivers when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance to pay for your injuries. In California, uninsured motorist property damage can also help with damage to your vehicle.
Medical Payments
Pays medical bills for the driver and passengers in your vehicle after an accident, no matter who was at fault.
Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability
Hired auto covers liability when you rent or borrow a vehicle for business. Non-owned auto covers your business when employees use their own cars for work, such as picking up supplies or going to the bank.
Physical Damage: Protection for Your Vehicles
Collision
Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a crash with another vehicle or an object, or after a rollover, regardless of fault. You pay the deductible.
Comprehensive
Covers damage that isn't a collision: theft, vandalism, fire, broken glass, falling objects, storms, flood and hitting an animal.
Rental Reimbursement
Helps pay for a rental vehicle while yours is being repaired after a covered loss, so your business keeps moving.
Towing & Labor
Pays for towing and on-the-spot roadside labor when a covered vehicle breaks down.
Loan / Lease Gap
If your financed or leased vehicle is totaled, this pays the difference between what the vehicle is worth and what you still owe.
Custom Parts & Equipment
Covers permanently attached upgrades, such as ladder racks, lift gates, toolboxes, shelving, wraps and upfitted work bodies, that standard physical damage may not fully cover.
Trucking & Specialty Coverages
Motor Truck Cargo
Covers goods you haul for customers if they are damaged or stolen while on your truck, including loading and unloading when included in your policy.
Trailer Interchange / Non-Owned Trailer
Covers physical damage to trailers you don't own but are pulling under a written agreement or for your business.
State & Federal Filings
We can file proof of insurance required for trucking operations, such as the California Motor Carrier Permit (MCP), federal DOT/BMC-91X filings and the MCS-90 endorsement.
Employees as Insureds & Drive Other Car
Extends coverage to employees and, when added, to owners or employees who drive vehicles not listed on the policy.
Additional Insured, Waiver of Subrogation & Primary Wording
Contract endorsements that many general contractors, landlords and customers require before you can start a job. We issue certificates quickly.
Covered Auto Symbols
Your policy uses numbered "symbols" to show which vehicles are covered: for example, any auto, only owned autos, only listed autos, hired autos or non-owned autos. We make sure your symbols match how you actually use vehicles.
What a Commercial Auto Policy Usually Does Not Cover
- Tools and equipment that are not permanently attached. These are covered by a separate tools and equipment (inland marine) policy.
- Injuries to your own employees while working. These fall under workers' compensation.
- Customer property you haul, unless you add motor truck cargo coverage.
- Business use of a personal auto policy. Personal policies often exclude business use, which is why work vehicles need a commercial policy.
