Commercial Auto Insurance Cost

Quick answer: Most small businesses pay roughly $1,000 to $3,600 per vehicle per year for commercial auto insurance. Pickups and vans used locally sit at the low end. Box trucks, dump trucks and for-hire trucking cost more, and a single heavy truck can run well over $10,000 a year. Your price depends mostly on the vehicle, how it's used, who drives it and the limits you need.

National average commercial auto premiums

Progressive Commercial, one of the largest commercial auto insurers in the U.S., publishes the average monthly premium its customers paid in 2025. These are per policy, and many policies cover more than one vehicle.

Type of businessAverage per month
Contractors$260
Business auto (general business use)$276
For-hire specialty trucks (dump, tow, etc.)$734
For-hire transport trucks (freight)$926

What affects the cost of commercial auto insurance

  • Vehicle type and weight. A pickup or cargo van costs far less to insure than a 26-foot box truck, dump truck or tractor. Vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR carry higher required limits in California.
  • How the vehicle is used. Driving to job sites is rated differently from delivering goods, hauling for others or carrying passengers.
  • Radius of operation. Local work within 100 miles usually costs less than regional or long-haul driving and crossing state lines.
  • Drivers. Ages, years licensed and motor vehicle records (tickets, accidents, DUIs) are among the biggest rating factors.
  • Where vehicles are garaged. Urban ZIP codes with more traffic and theft cost more than rural ones.
  • Coverage limits and deductibles. A $1,000,000 limit costs more than state minimum, and a $1,000 deductible lowers physical damage premiums compared with $500.
  • Claims history and prior insurance. Clean loss runs and continuous coverage for the past 12 months help. A gap in coverage can raise rates.
  • Years in business. New ventures can be insured, but often pay more until they build a track record.

California commercial auto insurance requirements

Since January 1, 2025, California's minimum auto liability limits are $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage. Many businesses need more than the minimum:

  • Trucks 10,001 lbs GVWR and up generally need a California Motor Carrier Permit from the DMV, and general freight carriers must carry at least $750,000 combined single limit.
  • Interstate and hazardous materials carriers have federal minimums that can be much higher.
  • Contracts with general contractors, property managers, studios and shippers often require $1,000,000 in liability, additional insured wording and a certificate before you start work.

How to lower your commercial auto premium

  • Choose drivers carefully. Run motor vehicle records before hiring and keep drivers with recent accidents or violations off the policy.
  • Raise physical damage deductibles on vehicles you could afford to repair.
  • List your real radius and use. Overstating how far you drive costs money; understating it can cause claim problems.
  • Keep continuous coverage. Even a short lapse can raise your next premium.
  • Add dashcams or telematics. Some carriers offer discounts, and video helps defend claims.
  • Pay in full when you can, which often avoids installment fees.
  • Compare multiple carriers. Prices for the same truck can vary widely between insurers. An independent agent can shop several at once.

Commercial auto insurance cost FAQs

Is commercial auto insurance more expensive than personal auto?

Usually, yes. Business vehicles are driven more, often by several drivers, and carry higher liability limits. But a personal policy typically won't cover a vehicle used mainly for business, so the extra cost protects you from a denied claim.

Do I need commercial auto insurance if my vehicle is owned by my LLC or corporation?

Yes. A vehicle titled to a business needs a commercial auto policy. If employees drive their own cars for work, hired and non-owned auto coverage protects the business.

Can a new business get commercial auto insurance?

Yes. Several carriers write new ventures. Expect the insurer to look closely at the owner's and drivers' records and experience.

How fast can I get covered?

Once we have your vehicle and driver details, many policies can be bound quickly, and we can issue certificates for your clients as soon as coverage starts.

How much is commercial auto insurance for one truck?

For a single pickup or van used locally, many owners pay in the low thousands per year. For a box truck, dump truck or tractor, expect considerably more, depending on weight, radius and driver history. The fastest way to know is a quote.
